The issue of payment of tax is not contained in the DNA of Togo. We must establish a culture of tax, a civic culture. That is why we must speak of taxation and development. The term development is an important part of the formula. And we must work at it and explain that it is essential for the growth.
Not easy in a country where over 60% of the work force is informal. Taxpayers are minority and resistant to the idea of having to pay for others.
The leaders of SMEs / SMIs, for example, does not show a great enthusiasm to fulfill the various taxes and corporate taxes. It must be officials of the OTR (Togolese Revenue Authority) multiple reminders and injunctions to obtain satisfaction.
Germain Beba, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIT) wants lenient of these taxpayers. The problem, he explains, is a lack of knowledge of business taxation.
